BusLink FireWire Port Problem

I have a friend who bought a BusLink 80gig external drive with USB2, 
Firewire400 and SATA.  The USB2 and SATA work fine but the Firewire 
port seems to have some sort of termination problem.  The FW port does 
not work at all unless you have another firewire device in the chain.

Does anyone else have information or experience with this type of 
problem?
