I can power the switch down and up and it is restated. I can unplug the machine from the switch and plug it back in and it is fine. There seems to be something about the ethernet connection that does not hold for over about 3 to 5 days. I have changed all the obvious things such as cables.
Before declaring the built-in NIC foo, move the machine to a different port on the switch. Also try a different cable.
