Thanks for all your replies on the drive problems.   A last ditch effort - I 
put the drive in the freezer and then diskwarrior was able to see it - rebuilt 
it - its working fine - the directory was all corrupted.   Just before I left 
the office on Fri - I remembered the trick and it worked.   This is about the 
third   or fourth time I've gotten an unrecognizable drive up without 
reformatting/ reinitializing (which it seemed the mac only wanted to do).   Haven't 
had to do it for a year or so, so I forgot the trick, and it worked.   Thought 
I would share it.   thanks again -
