I agree that the floppy is long gone in the past. I haven't needed one since the introduction of the zip drive, and I loved it! Unfortunately I now need to share files with a dos user that doesn't have any intention of investing in newer technology. She doesn't have any idea how to format a floppy, much less use the internet, so this is the only option for sharing files.

Do I think apple should be providing floppy drives in new macs? Of course not!! I do feel however that they should at least offer a driver online to allow those of us that have the occasional need for a floppy to use one. Regardless of the age of the mac I'm using, it is an apple product, and is supposed to be supported by the version of OSX I'm running.

I admire all of you who are still using older Macs for daily work. I,
myself, have a beige G3 266 at work running OS X 10.2.6 and OS 9.2.2.
When using OS X, the internal floppy does not work. OS X does not
support floppy drives except for external USB drives. This has been
widely known and published on Apple's site since the introduction of OS
X.

That is the same machine I use. Regarding my lack of knowledge of OSX, I wasn't reading up on it because I knew I didn't need it on my older machine. Then my daughter needed to use a program (microsloth of course) that wasn't supported on OS9, and I'm stuck trying to keep business happening in a new OS.

Friends, Apple continues to bring us into the future. Is it practical
to try to copy files which can often exceed 1.4 megabytes using an
outdated floppy disk? Apple has solved this by equipping all of it's
modern Macs with a CD-RW drive.

Nobody claimed it was practical. In some cases it IS necessary however. Not everyone we do business with is smart enough to buy a mac. ;)

The floppy drive is just as much a legacy device as 300 bps modem.
Though this may not be to your liking, it is a fact. I cheer at the
demise of the floppy and bless my iMac every day for it's lack of one.
The lack of a floppy drive is yet another fine improvement that
distinguishes my Mac from a PC.
Following the thread, 'No floppy in Jaguar', I see that many of you do
not feel that same and actually bash Apple for not supporting the
floppy. You all sound like a bunch of DOS users complaining about
Windows. The future is now! Save your pennies and buy a modern Mac.

I find your critical tone towards other listmembers disappointing. This is an attitude I'd expect in the windoze forums rather than the family atmosphere I've experienced in most Mac forums - including the short time I've spent here. If you knew the sacrifices my family needs to make for every penny spent on computers, I like to think you would have the class to have kept that last comment to yourself.
