I have two G3's connected. Both are running OS9. 9.1 on one, and 9.2 on the other. I first shared them with crossover cable and now am using a hub so I can share a PC. Be sure you have cross-over cable. It is not the same as a regular CAT5. A CAT5 cable will not work unless you have a hub or switch. In both situations, sharing is the same. First thing you need to do: 1. Click on the Apple in left upper corner and drop down to Control Panels and to Apple Talk. Select Ethernet. Save. 2. Click on the Apple in left upper corner and drop down to Control Panels and to File Sharing. Assign a Owner name, computer name and Password. Save. 3. Start file sharing in the same panel. You will see a graphic depicting a cable and a file folder. The cable in the graphic will "pump" a number of times. When it stops pumping, the connection is complete. 4. Do this on both machines. 5. Then you can go the chooser and select AppleShare. The other HD should show up in the right panel. Double-click on it and enter the name and password for the other machine you just entered in the file-sharing panel. 6. The HD icon of the other machine will show up on your desktop. TIP: Once you have file sharing turned on on both machines it will stay on even when shutting down or restarting. It seems to make for a more secure connection if the machine you want to use as "server" is turned on first. Once it is up, turn on the other machine. You will be asked during the start up process if you want to share. Using the chooser will result in the computer name being changed for some reason. Kind of a pain. I usually have to go the other machine and bring up the file sharing panel to check the name. And by the way these names are case-sensitive. Good luck.
