Glenn and all:
It sounds like there's a corrupt image in your file
somewhere - probably right where the progress bar
stops when the file's opening. Sorry to say, you've
done about everything that can be done to get that
file open. Since the file isn't giving you any error
messages, you <might> still be able to get it open.
Traditionally, I've better luck opening troublesome
.ppt files on a Mac - allocate a ridiculous amount of
memory to PowerPoint (one day I gave the app 120 meg),
and then go grab a sandwich.
For the future:
1) Always do a Save As at some point to force
PowerPoint to write a new file - this usually gets rid
of any garbage that might corrupt the file.
2) In theory, PowerPoint supports most graphic
formats; in practice it turns out to be a lot of
trouble as the file size grows. And you can never
predict what's going to go wrong or when. Keep your
original jpg, eps, gif images some place safe; but put
them into PowerPoint as <picture> or <picture
(enhanced metafile)>. This puts the image into a MS
friendly format that's pretty much useless in non-MS
apps, but creates smaller file sizes and leads to
fewer problems when working on the file.
Hopefully the file's not completely dead (been there
done that).
Good luck.
Nicole
=============================
I'm using Office 2001 in Classic mode on an iBook G3
900. I did a bunch
of work on it. Saved it and quit PPT. Now when I go to
open it the
"open file" progress bar goes about 2/3 of the way
then stops and I get
the dreaded spinning watch hands and have to force
quit. The
presentation has a lot of .jpg and gifs associated
with it. The entire
folder is clocking 70 MB.
Things I've tried:
- Allocated more memory to PPT. No joy.
- Booted to OS 9 and tried to open it. No joy.
- Copied it to my XP laptop and tried to open it. Same
symptoms.
- Tried to open presentation w/o associated files. No
joy.
- Let the watch hands go for 30+ minutes. No joy.
My "newest" back up is from April 25th. I was 50% done
when it crashed.
The back up is only about 25% of it. Better than
nothing. Note to self:
back up more often. Doom on me.
Thanks,
Glenn
