I believe you are correct about it getting to a certain point and encountering a corrupt image and stopping.
I have tried the trick of allocating more memory to PowerPoint and waiting. Perhaps I didn't wait long enough and I'll try it again. In your case, did the file open after you got back from your sandwich?
This is an update on what I've tried:
- downloaded openoffice for both Mac and PC and tried to open presentation. No joy. Open office doesn't crash. It simply says the file is not a supported type.
- Emailed presentation to someone with Keynote. No joy.
- Trashed prefs files on the Mac for PPT. No joy.
I think I'm cooked.
Things I've learned:
- PPT can crash at any time. Backup after each major add.
- After finishing, create a duplicate for a snap shot in time and KEEP it.
- As Nicole mentioned in the part of her email I didn't include in the reply: simply do a "Save as..." and overwrite the file to "renew" it.
Thanks to all for the many suggests. We had a good run.

It sounds like there's a corrupt image in your file somewhere - probably right where the progress bar stops when the file's opening. Sorry to say, you've done about everything that can be done to get that file open. Since the file isn't giving you any error messages, you <might> still be able to get it open. Traditionally, I've better luck opening troublesome .ppt files on a Mac - allocate a ridiculous amount of memory to PowerPoint (one day I gave the app 120 meg), and then go grab a sandwich.
