I'm looking to buy a digital camera-- So far I have it narrowed down to the
Canon S400 or the Canon A80

I have a canon S300, it was a wonderful camera. It took amazing pictures for 2.0MP, never had any problems. THEN I got a message on the screen E18. The lens would not come out. then shut down. Repeated on, off, on, off. Nothing. I did a google search. WOW amazingly I was not the only one!!! People all over the world are having the very same problem!!! Supposedly this is not a 'canon' malfunction, so they say! It is grit and sand build up in the lens mechanism. So, after trying everything on the net to no avail....... I took the ENTIRE camera apart. cleaned every single sprocket that operated the lens mechanism. Put it safely back together. STILL E18!!
The moral. Be cautious when buying Canon. Get a GOOD warranty, at a place with a known good return policy. People have had this problem as soon as it is taken out of the box.
Sorry for being so long, and off topic.
