Also did the Google check-- saw the complaints... Then I checked Consumer Reports-- one of the things they rate is "repairs & reliability". In the digital camera category Canon was among those w/ the lowest incidence of problems that needed repair (based on a survey of over 107,000 people).
People w/ an ax to grind are always more likely to let the world know than people who are satisfied... Re. "a good warrantee": Even the extended warrantees I've seen have a "fine-print" clause excluding damage caused by grit-- which seems to be the source of the E18 problem...
