re: ram problems, the problem is actually with the eeprom that tells the machine about the ram timing, some manufacturers read or implemented the spec wrong, making the machine unhappy even the the ram chips themselves are fine (there are relatively few companies that actually make the chips, but many that slap them on boards to resell). there was/is a utility to check for this bad programming, and i believe it can also attempt to fix the settings stored in the simms eeprom, though of course that is at your risk.... sorry i don't remember the utilities name, but it is out there on twocows or version tracker most likely.
