First, even if Classic works well for you, it's not a great solution for apps you use all the time. I strongly encourage you to consider upgrading to OS X versions of your apps. Any version of Photoshop can be used to get either version 8--or the entire Creative Suite--for the upgrade price.

I'd do 6 things to get started on troubleshooting your Classic performance. First, I'd make sure I had the most recent OS 9 ATI drivers installed and tune the settings for the best performance while booted into OS 9. Second, while still in OS 9, I'd be sure to empty the trash. Third, while running OS X, I'd go through the OS 9 programs you use and 'get info' on them, see what the memory allocations are, and adjust, as needed. Fourth, while running Classic, I'd use the Memory/Versions tab in the Classic preferences to see if some app or background app is using an unusually large about of memory. Fifth, while still in the Classic preferences, I'd rebuild the desktop. Sixth, since you're running 10.3 on an unsupported machine, I'd send an email to Mr Rempel and company describing your problems and see if they might be related to his hacks.

As for your Compact Flash issues, the reason JPEGs and Stuffit files work is that they have file name extensions. Try using the standard extensions when naming your other files, such as .psd or .doc, and see if they will work.

I had no such problem in 10.2.8.

I guess I should look at my Classic system. Maybe it needs to be pared down
even more. Worth a try, I guess. But it is the same system I used in Jaguar.
What changed?

Another odd feature of Panther that I've not gotten to the bottom of is that Mac
files loaded on a Compact Flash card in 9 are displayed with their resource
forks in a seperate folder in Panther and so are unusable. I use CF cards like
floppy disks between work an home. This means I need to download Mac files (not
jpegs or sit files, which apparently have no resource forks) in 9.2. There was
no problem with this in Jaguar.

(My system is a Beige MT with a 466 G4, full memory, RAdeon Mac 7000 etc.
Panther is supported by Xpostfacto, of course.)
