In my experience, the Canon software is wierd.  I deleted most of that extension
stuff.  There is supposed to be a way to get the camera to appear as a drive on
the desktop but I never got it to work.  So you are stuck with dumping the
photos into the Canon software.

That's why I use a card reader.  I take the card out of the camera and put it in
the reader as though it were a disk drive, to dump the photos to the computer. 
The card reader does mount the card on the desktop like a drive.  Faster than
the camera too, I think. USB card readers are going for $15 these days so it's
worth giving one a try.

My S50 has a neat feature that senses the position of the camera and the Canon
software auto rotates them.  That's the only thing I use the Canon software for. 
It does have some nifty printing features, including a nice way to make photo
collages.
