Photorescue (www.datarescue.com/photorescue/) works very well.  $30 if I
remember correctly.  It will even recover deleted photos from an intact card.  

You can't go wrong since you can test the software on the card to see what it
can find before buying it.

It was worth the investment for saving just one set of almost lost pictures.
