Well that PhotoRescue software has my vote. I got back 133 photos, 5 of which had some level of corruption- the embedded preview was fine but the main image itself was only 2/3 intact perhaps. Irreplaceable photos of 17-yr locusts emerging (well not replaceable for 17 years anyway :)
Lots easier than hacking thru the media with Norton Disk Editor as I've done for floppies. And this will work on HDs, floppies, whatever. So it's on my wife's laptop now nad hopefully that will help when students
I'm sorry I couldn't find a linux-y solution for OS X quickly as I'm sure there's one around; but this shareware was literally one mouse click. I'd love to be able to do this sort of thing from a Mac, and it SHOULD be possible in X.
