 Hi,

I've ran into an odd situation which I've never seen before. I'll
try to describe as best as possible.

 The scenario:
Machine a) G3/300 bege, OS 9.2.2; 20G hard disk, MacOS Extended,
 containing about 16G of data.
Machine b) Performa 6360, OS 8.1; brand new 40G hard disk nearly
 empty (Seagate), MacOS Extended.

 The plan:
Copy all data on the G3 disk (16G) into the Performa disk (38G
free space) and switch disks thereafter.

 The problem:
I started the G3 from a CD, connected the two machines via ethernet
using the Performa as server and started the process. I did a few
folders first and paused for a couple of hours. As I resumed the
process, I was surprised by this nonsense message I got: "There is
not enough room on the disk 'performaDisk'.... I went to the
Performa and opened its HD Get Info window, and it said it had 36G
available. However, calling the Performa HD's Get Info window
remotely (from the G3), it says the disk's total capacity is 1.9G
 /1.9G available.

This is a limitation of the AppleShare Filing Protocol (AFP) that FileSharing uses. It uses a 32 bit signed integer for reporting free space on an AppleShare volume so the largest it can report is 2Gb (4Gb in some cases). So when Finder goes to copy it checks on the free space an only sees 2Gb, not enough. You're going to have to copy stuff in no more than 2Gb chunks.

Hi all; Another way to do this is to pull the CD out of the G3 and put the performaDisk in place of the CD and copy away. I did this when I put a 40GB HDD in place of the 4GB my G3 came with. Just make sure the performe Disk is set to ID=0 when you put it in place of the CD. HTH --Thanks; Rev. George --Maranatha (means the Lord cometh)

What do you mean by ID=0? The Performa disk is IDE.
