I have a very basic B&W G3/300 rev A. It booted fine until I installed (at the same time) a SCSI card, a stock internal modem and a 450mHz ZIF (and pushed the CUDA switch).

Then when I tried to boot the 15" Philips monitor came up black screen with a small blue box "please check signal". Then the monitor would turn itself off. This happened every try at booting. Until today, when it went through this process, then showed a gray screen with a Windoze-style message at top-left:

Mac OS: Boot Failure <0XF3C481F6>
Mac OS: ROM checksum failure!
Apple PowerMac 1, 1 1.0f3 BootROM built on 12/08/98 at 17:37:15
yadda yadda
Open Firmware 1.1.0
ok

On reinstalling the original ZIF (pushing the CUDA switch again) it would not boot normally, but now comes up with a blank screen for some lengthy seconds, then a small folder symbol appears with a face in profile within, which then flashes alternating with a questionmark. This goes on for some 30s, then freezes, then boots normally.

Also, can you cause damage by pushing the CUDA switch without disconnecting the power cable?
