Thanks Bruce,
So if I want to point at the directory "family" on the non-main drive "untitled", do I refer to it as:
/untitled/documents/family (if family is inside documents)
Nope, you have to use /Volumes/untitled/documents/family
The Mac (and unix) file system is a large tree. '/' is the root directory, all others branch off of it. Volumes is one branch off the root directory.
Fire up a Terminal windows, do some exploring.
The commands you need :
cd <directory> Change Directory will move you to the directory named. If no leading '/' is in the name, you'll change to the directory with that name within the current directory.
two special commands of note: 'cd' with no name after it returns you to yur home directory. 'cd ..' moves you 'back' out of the directory you're currently in.
Start with 'cd /' and do ls -l.
You see entries like:
drwxrwxr-x 37 johnson admin 1258 22 Jan 10:44 System Folder drwxrwxr-t 9 root admin 306 6 Jul 16:08 Users drwxrwxrwt 8 root admin 272 8 Jul 17:25 Volumes drwxr-xr-x 4 root admin 136 16 Jun 13:56 automount drwxr-xr-x 35 root wheel 1190 26 May 14:24 bin drwxrwxrwt 2 root wheel 68 16 Jun 13:38 cores dr-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 28 Jun 14:07 dev lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 11 16 Jun 13:38 etc -> private/etc lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 9 28 Jun 14:07 mach -> /mach.sym -r--r--r-- 1 root admin 569532 28 Jun 14:07 mach.sym -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 3858620 12 May 16:58 mach_kernel
Anything starting off with a 'd' is a directory.
to get into the Volumes directory type:
cd Volumes
[dbdev2:/] johnson% cd Volumes [dbdev2:/Volumes] johnson% ls -l total 104 lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 28 Jun 14:08 BigWerx -> / drwxrwxr-x 19 root admin 646 2 Jul 15:19 Userland drwx------ 1 johnson admin 16384 20 Apr 10:26 pint drwx------ 1 johnson admin 16384 25 Jun 16:08 prodoracle drwxr-xr-x 15 johnson unknown 466 23 Jun 15:15 workgroups drwx------ 1 johnson admin 16384 8 Jul 15:50 www
to go back out type
cd ..
