This limitation only applies if you're using the onboard IDE controller. If you put in an add-on controller (highly recommended, as the built-in controller is dog-slow), you can make your X boot partition as large as you want. I put a 60GB IBM Deskstar 60GXP (hand-me-down from one of the x86 boxen) on an UltraATA100 controller and set it up with one big partition to hold both 9.2.something and 10.2.8.
