It is possible to do it this way. Don't think there is any speed difference. You can boot to the OS 9 CD and install the system and it will put it there and it will not harm OS X.

I have always put 9 on first. Then insert the X disk and restart and install just like putting X on for the first time. After dozens of installs it hasn't failed me yet.
