I went through this very same quandary a few months ago with my daughters Beige MT 266. I finally decided to take the plunge. While the initial install was a little it of a pain with xpostfacto and removing all pci cards etc, it did install. I just found OS X on a 266 G3 to be sluggish due to the 66 MHz bus speed and the mobo architecture. I was able to purchase a B&W rev 2, 350 for a great price and was really surprised at the difference of the OS X experience on this machine vs. the Beige. If you want to keep your hardware investment to a minimum, that is the direction I would go. I would not purchase an eMac. The limits in regards to upgrades would be my concern. If you are willing to purchase a used G4, I would look for at least a Digital Audio (133 MHz bus speed 33% faster than a Sawtooth), the video is AGP, and the chip architecture is a little easier to upgrade. I have a DA 533 that I upgraded to with 933 MHz Fastmac 7455 Apple OEM chip. Easy to install, and IMHO, 1 GHz is the minimum clock speed to run Panther effectively. I thought the feature and speed jump between Jaguar (10.2.x) and Panther (10.3.x) was significant. With "Tiger" on the way, upper end of the old G4's is really the minimum for the new era of OSX. My next purchase (as I save my pennies) will be a G5. Good Luck, Wade Perry -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
