Since I have the machinery to accomplish almost any task quickly, I removed the guard and smoothed the remaining sharp areas using high-speed abrasive tools. On my early conversions, I also modified the power supply unit (PSU) to incorporate an internal fan guard. I no longer perform the PSU modification as it takes too long in return for accommodating the finger injury that that fan might very improbably cause. >>Because of certain limitations of the Beige DRAM controller chip, >>high-density sticks which are double sided (256 MB total RAM) may be read >>incorrectly as 128 MB. > >Interestingly I have sort of the opposite problem. I have 2GBs of 256MB >PC133 DIMMs that work splendidly in my PowerMacs Gossamer and Yosemite, >but aren't seen at all by my Sawtooth or Quicksilver. These problems can often be traced to the selection of improper row and column address line mapping. Either by Apple or by the RAM stick manufacturer (the RAM chip manufacturer must be presumed to be doing it right, as they follow the JEDEC standard). In particular, the 3400 and Kanga had some issues, and which Apple released a monograph for expansion RAM designers which described several work-arounds. Especially for the 5300/3400 case. It appears that in the Beige case, 128 MB/stick was selected as the target SDRAM size (the machine's spec maxes out the RAM at 384 MB), and that some 256 MB sticks would work as 256 MB, but that others would work as only 128 MB, and that some 512 MB sticks would work as 256 MB (the apparent design maximum per SDRAM slot), but others wouldn't work. Other than the occasionally bizarre results of installing SDRAM of high capacity (256 MB or larger) and the more bizarre necessity of doing a Cmd-Opt-P-R TEN times in order to properly reset the machine, the Beige is perhaps Apple's best designed machine (and it is ost probably Apple's best packaged machine). -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
