Greetings and felicitations. I'm new to this list and reading your posts is making me both curious and a bit technically overwhelmed at the same time. Hopefully you can answer some questions. Here's my setup --
G3/233 96 MB RAM OS 9.1 on two HDs (a 4 GB and a 2 GB), OS 8.1 on the third HD (2 GB). Apple Personal LaserWriter I also have a Smart & Friendly 8020 external SCSI CDRW burner and Toast 5 Lite -- which don't seem to want to burn CDs (data backup is all I need from it), and in light of this, someone gave me an Iomega Zip drive for my birthday recently (as soon as I get Zip disks, I'll try that instead). My curiosities -- some generated by my own problems, others gathered from what I'm reading in here so far -- are as follows: 1. Does anyone know if I need special drivers to get the CDRW to burn a CD? The Toast seems to work, at least in the sense that it (a) recognizes the presence of the CDRW and (b) very nicely allows me to select the data I want to save to CD. The problem is, if I use a rewritable disk (which would be my preference), the setup tells me to please insert a writable disk. If I use a one-time-only CD, the system usually accepts it, but not always, and when it does, there are interminable delays. Frankly, it's so bad I've lost patience waiting for it to "prepare the disc" or whatever it said it was doing, I'd go off and watch a movie, come back and find it STILL in this "preparation" mode, and just quit out of Toast, eject the CD and turn off the CDRW in disgusted frustration. But since I still have the thing sitting here, and it didn't even cost me any money, well, before I really and truly give up on it....you know? 2. Inspired by a question on LEM's PCI list (prior to getting my G3 I was on a 7200/120, so I spent some time on that list), which made me join the G-list today: What is a cuda switch, what is it used for, and if I needed it, where would I find it? 3. I think I'm getting AppleWorks soon, which lots of people say will fix this problem, but can anyone tell me WHY my present word processing program (been using it for years), ClarisWorks 4, will not work properly under OS 9.1? Yes, I can open documents and type in them, but the Search and Replace function is fubar, and so is the list of file formats under "save as." Namely I can't save in .rtf if I run it under OS 9.1. What I want to know is why, if possible. Yes, this is why I'm still using 8.1 (the OS I was using with my 7200) on one of my G3's HDs for now. I do a lot of writing and these functions are crucial to me. 4. What would I have to do to get my G3 to run OS X, and is there REALLY any good reason why I'd want to? And did I just read a post from someone today about not being able to use his or her current printer with OS X? Does that mean if I got OS X, I'd have to buy a new printer......?! 5. Which flavor of OS 9 is really the best for my G3 as I presently have it? By best I mean most stable, efficient and "speedy." 6. My G3, having come with OS 9.1 also came with a bunch of Microsoft apps already on it (most of which I definitely intend to delete as soon as I "straighten myself out"), including Internet Exploiter. I'm used to, and know I can use, Netscape and iCAB as browsers under 9.1 just as I did on 8.1. But I also hear that some websites "do better" with IE, and have sometimes encountered difficulty with Netscape and iCAB. So I'm CONSIDERING keeping and occasionally using IE if I have to. But unlike with Netscape and iCAB, I can't find in the System Folder's Preferences for Explorer a cookies file -- which I'd lock up the way I did with the cookies files on Netscape and iCAB (i.e., via Get Info). So -- and my decision to keep/use IE totally depends on if I can somehow do a similar permanent cookies lockup on IE -- can anyone tell me where to find it and how to do it? That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
