I assume that we are talking about a Beige G3, which should work
better with OS 9 applications for many users any way.

If you did install OS 9.x, you would certainly know it, because it
would have taken quite some time, especially if you did a custom
installation.

On the basis of your statements, I would guess that the hard drive is
OK, but just not mounted.  It just seems unlikely that the drive would
die during what you did.

You have made several references to missing "images," or icons, on the
desktop.  Do you see the drive within any disk utility programs, such
as Apple's Disk First Aid, Drive Setup,
or other?  If yes, then try to mount it.
