I did a bunch of digging and reading last night on Apple's and XLR8's web sites. I found a little tidbit about Western Digital drives that I did not know. Mike said not to jumper a WD drive to master, but to remove all pins so it is set to single, if it is the only drive. I also found a recommendation of trying erase and install, rather than reformat the drive and installing.
As I write this, the jumperless WD drive is getting a fresh Erase & Install of OS 10.2 from the CD.
The software appeared to install on the WD drive, but the computer would not boot from it.
I have pulled the WD drive an installed a 20 GB Seagate drive. It appears to be workable. I have installed OS 10.2 and all the various updates to get it to 10.2.8
