I agree that the USB card is a very useful addition. This gives you the option of adding USB keyboards and mice, digital still cameras, modern USB printers and the like as well as the pen drive or a floppy. It'll make that G3 a pretty modern machine. All for the 10 buck for the card. SmartDisk sell a USB floppy drive for around $30.00 that work just great. They're sold at Walmart, or at least were as recently as a few months ago. Personally, unless you're in a big rush, I'd watch SmartDisk's site. They put up some refurbished floppy drives from time to time that are pretty cheap. I bought one for around $10 a few months ago.
I have installed x.2 on a g3 and everything is running but the floppy drive.
Did I miss something?
Will this not work in X?
I switched out the drive and still nothing.
I transfer files on floppy to a pc so I would like to get this running.
FUGEDDABODIT!!. The floppy is not supported in X. There is a hack that I do
not think that anyone on the list, including myself, has gotten to work.
Your best option is to pick up a USB pen drive. According to dealram.com,
you can get a 128 Megabyte unit (90x the capacity of a floppy), for $21.00
shipped in the US. They also have some interesting variations, including a
wristwatch with 128M of storage and a combo pen drive/mp3 player.
These drives are also generally very sturdy, I ran mine through the washing
machine and it still works, YMMV.
