From what I have experienced and read the USB2 cards will only work in OSX (at USB 1.1 speed).
I bought a USB 2.0 card a year and a half ago for an 8500 with OS 9.1. Would not work. Tried it in a 9500 with 8.6 and did not work. Slapped it in my beige G3 with OS X 10.2 (later updated to 10.2.8 ) and works as-is no problem. Can't specifically comment on a combo card though.
AFAIK most USB 2.0 cards do work with OS 8.6 and 9.1. But the card needs to be in the computer when the OS is installed or the driver has to be installed manually.
