I can't see why your retail OS 8.5 would not install on the B&W. The retail version of OS 9xx should work as well, the retail versions should have all of the installers needed for different Macs.
I would suggest installing OS X 10.2.8 on your B&W if you have 256MB RAM or more and you can use OS 9 classic for any old apps you have. If you don't have 256MB I would strongly suggest getting more RAM and going right to OS X, and you'll wonder why you ever wanted to use OS 9.
I have 10.2.8 on my B&W 300 with 576MB RAM and I kick myself for not going to OS X sooner. What a difference !
