As others have mentioned, go with the Router. The only thing missing with the equation is a converter from your Ethernet cable to the LocalTalk connector. I use a Fallon Ethernet-to-LocalTalk converter on my 1996 HP 6MP LaserPrinter under AppleTalk, and as others have mentioned with similar systems have had no problems.
FWIW, if you are using a cable or DSL modem without a router, you are needlessly exposed to outside intrusion. A router solves the problem and has the added benefit of sharing your connection for several computers. An absolute must if you are running Windows systems, its a good thing to have with Mac as well. Additionally, the price is now at about ~ $50 for a system that is more than capable of meeting your needs.
