Yes, I use "Carbon Copy Cloner" I guess I'll have to erase the drive and start over. Thanks a lot.

Do you have a cloned OS on the back-up drive ?
If so, maybe it's trying to boot from the external and the cloned OS has an incompatible monitor resolution setting.
