computergeeks.com has a dvd+r recorder meant for video that will put up to 8 hours on a
disk at reduced quality, and it only uses mpeg-2, i think mpeg-4 may offer better
compression.  of course if you are starting with analog the copy won't be as good as 
the
"original", if you start with a digital source you can make a copy as good as the
original, which of course is what's so neat about storing analog data in digital form,
i.e. you can copy it without further loss.
