Boy that is really unMaclike.
That's exactly what I was thinking, John
The funny thing that I now reflect on is in the amount of ways in which OS X is so non-Mac.
I agree with you Larry. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. If Apple manages to make something better than the Classic OS, I will happily switch.
Modernization is not always a bad thing, even when it involves learning how to use an OS from the 60s. It just takes time and patience.
But it has taken me some time to adjust to the new organisation and user interface. I find myself going to the wrong control panels repeatedly or wondering which one to open. It's not always so logically spread out.
I have to say... Panther is a breath of fresh air. I've used 10.0 and .1 and Jaguar, and really didn't feel they were ready for prime time. I actually think Panther is Good.
We didn't end up with OSX for technological reasons. Apple could very well have continued pushing their superior concept, and rewritten the Classic environment to be truly multitasking and multi-threaded.
Um... You gotta do some serious peering at the classic OS' internals before making that statement. There are some very specific technological reasons why Apple stuck with cooperative multitasking, and didn't release their attempts at implementing full memory protection and preemptive multitasking.
Totally swapping out the core of the OS was the only viable choice.
If I remember right he made Apple buy Next, killed development on the new Classic concept, and then based the Mac OS on it's NextStep system. Tata! OSX was born.
See Bruce's great reply.
IMO, OS X based on Linux or Be would have ROCKED. What we got was schtuck with NeXTStep and Jobs' ego.
I would say that OSX is good. But it could have beeen better.
Understatement. A Unix based OS that only runs well on supercomputer-class machines. ROFL. We were time-sharing 200 people on 4 MIP Unix boxes back in the 80s! Here we are 20 years later and we're calling that OS "new"? And now it takes a supercomputer just to display a directory full of files quickly for one user????
An his insistence on design and attention to details has brought us extremely slick and well-integrated systems ever since. There is no fan in my iBook disturbing this writing...
Yea, Jobs found a rabbit in his hat with the original iMac design. But the iTit? ow. And remind me to never put you in a room with that 50 pound ugly monstrosity called an eMac and a one of my local school teachers. :)
FWIW, - Dan.
