The beige G3's are all IDE, but have an internal SCSI bus used for Zip drives or not at all. It can be used for a hard drive since the rev.a ROMs do not support a second drive on the IDE bus.

Is the taped wire the power supply wire harness ? With 4 wires ?

I would open up the wiring splice and see what was done to it. The wires should be soldered together and not just twisted and taped.
If this is the problem the wires can be soldered and covered with shrinkwrap.

If the tape is on the flat ribbon cable, throw it away and get another cable because it's not worth trying to fix.

can't be a termination issue.

I would guess it's the "splice" you're referring to. Have you tried
replacing the cable?

Thanks for asking. I have checked the connections
between the motherboard and the drive. Upon
inspection of the wiring harness, I notice that
further down the line, there is a spot wrapped in
electrical tape where the previous owner had ?made a
splice. I will check into that further. Assuming that
the splice is ok, any other ideas? (I am trying to
rule out other problems before I get a new drive.)

An internal drive must be properly terminated, although I'm not sure
that would cause the "?" icon and render it invisible to Drive Setup.
Have you checked that?
