On reinstalling the OS on my B&W G3/300 rev A, Eudora 6 lost all of
its address book settings (address ook is empty) and the mailboxes
are inactive... If I go to the Apps copy and open the mailboxes one
by one they appear in the dropdown menu for a while, then disappear
again. The mailboxes folder in the Sys:Docs copy has only the default
maiboxes.

I tried copying the Eudora Nicknames file from my 6116 (Eudora
5.1.5), but inserting this into either copy in the G3 didn't do
anythig. If I clicked on the Eudora Nicknames file in the G3 copies,
all that happened was that a mailbox (!) opened, titled Nicknames. If
I click on the 5.1. Eudora nicknames, I get the full list of
nicknames & addresses... but if I copy it I can't paste it into the
others, as they are not nickname fils...

HELP!! What's up and how do I cure the Mailbox and Address Book problems?

Which copy of Eudora folder should have the active settings and
application, the Applications copy or the System:documens copy? What
should be duplicated between them and what shouldn't?

Andrew,

I'm not an expert on Eudora (though I have been using it for five years) and you didn't say which OS you are using. Given those disclaimers, here is my response:

--I'm not sure why there is an "Apps copy" of your mailboxes. All of my mailboxes are in the Mail Folder inside the Eudora Folder which is inside the Documents folder (root level in OS 9, in Home folder in OS X).

--There is a Eudora Settings file (and a Eudora Settings.bkup file) in the Eudora Folder. There is also a com.qualcomm.eudora.plist file in the Preferences file in the Library file in the Home folder. (In OS 9, I think this would be in the Preferences folder in the System Folder).

My guess (going from mildest to most serious problem) is that you could have a corrupt preferences file, a faulty install of the application, or corrupt mailbox and nickname files.

--My first move would be to quit the application, get rid of the Eudora Settings file, the Settings.bkup file, and the preference file (trash or move to another volume), then re-launch the application and see what happens.

--My next move would be to trash the preference file, move the entire Eudora Folder to another volume, and re-install the application. Then I would replace the new (empty) mailbox files one at a time with your existing mailboxes, and follow that with the nicknames file.

--If neither of those steps work, then I would bank on the probability that someone else on this list knows more than I do.
