Therein lies your problem. You have multiple copies of things floating around, apparently many incomplete. You need to fix this.
Quit Eudora first. Never fool with its files while it's running!
Make sure you have one and *only* one copy of the Eudora *application* folder on your system.
Application folder or file?
You should have exactly two high level folders relating to Eudora. One, in your Applications folder, contains the application itself and its supporting files. The other, normally in your System Folder or Documents folder (depends on OS version), contains your Eudora Settings file, mailboxes, etc. That's it. No others.
Now, locate each "Eudora Folder" that contains your user data (settings, mailboxes, address books, etc). By default, it's called "Eudora Folder" and lives in your System Folder, or in your Documents folder (depends on the version of the OS).
Create *one* "Eudora Folder". Do this in some convenient location. You can point Eudora to this folder by putting an alias of it in the System Folder or Documents folder, later.
OK, done (one Eudora folder in total, that is)... Now living on its own, not in any other folder.
The critical files are as follows:
Eudora Settings -- This is the central control file for Eudora.
Yep... and it keeps reproducing, with backups... deleted al the copies but more appear.
Depending on what settings you've selected. By default, I believe, Eudora makes a copy of the Settings file each time it is modified - in that same directory. The file should be called "Eudora Settings.bkup".
This file is what Eudora actually opens FIRST. Eudora then looks in the Settings file's folder to find all this other stuff. IOW, you can switch what Eudora is doing completely if you double-click on a settings file that lives in a different folder.
Eudora Filters -- what you see in Eudora's Filters window.
There are none now... there were before I reinstalled the OS.
Reinstalling the OS does not destroy Eudora's files. If you did a "clean install" - created a new System Folder, then the old files would be in the old System Folder. If you did a regular install then Apple's Installer simply updated files within your existing System Folder.
Eudora Nicknames -- your primary address book file.
Nicknames Folder -- your secondary adress books go in here.
3 of these, none working. I've copied the contents of one across to the other and deleted the empties.
Personal Nicknames -- a "mini" address book that contains just YOUR personal address information and vCard.
Empty.
IMAP Folder -- A folder full of your IMAP mailboxes, if any.
Empty.
Mail Folder -- The folder full of your POP2 mailboxes.
Lots of these, and at least they are working.
Parts Folder -- A folder full of the graphics and such that were included "inline" in email messages.
Attachments Folder -- A folder full of the files attached to incoming email messages.
No problems here.
Stationery Folder -- Your templates for emails.
Signature Folder -- Your sig files.
OK.
The other files/folders in there are mostly garbage. Ads, history & link indices, etc. I tend to just delete them now and then -- speeds Eudora up.
Done, but some of them immediately regenerate.
Yea. They contain temp files and whatnot.
You can merge address books one of two ways:
1) In a text editor.
2) Put *all* the old address books in "Nicknames Folder". Launch Eudora. It will then create a new "Eudora Nicknames" file. You can then drag things around in the address book window.
I had to create a Nicknames folder. Put remaining Eudora Nicknames file in it... whatever, I still can't access it through the Address Book, which shows as empty.
You can merge mailbox files by naming them uniquely and putting them in the Mail Folder. Launch Eudora. Open the Mailboxes window. Open individual mailboxes then drag messages around.
Done.
As for things appearing and disappearing... That worries me. That tells me you have a memory allocation problem. Eudora "permanently" maps the In, Out, Junk, and Trash. If they're big, Eudora can run out of memory. Then other functions fail... Perhaps until you get these files in order, you should temporarily give Eudora lots of extra memory, 20000K or more.
I already had it set to 16000 but have increased it.
Basically it seems to be OK except that I can't open a new "Message To" or "Insert recipient"... I have to find an existing message and copy the address from it. THAT is annoying, to say the least.
Perhaps I will have to reinstall Eudora, though this ALWAYS brings great headaches, what with FURTHER duplication of items (WHY does it do this?) and trouble accessing mailboxes etc...
It was working with both copies of Eudora before... maybe something became corrupted when I copied it back onto the HD.
"both copies". You mean you had two different versions of Eudora using the same Settings file? If that's the case... the newer version updated the Settings then the older version saw them as corrupted, and probably made the problem worse.
Try creating just a new Settings file. Quit Eudora. Drag your old Settings file and its backup to the desktop. Launch Eudora. Reset things. See if that improves anything.
...If you want... Send me a stuffit archive of your Eudora Folder, without the mailboxes. I'll give it a peruse using my installation of Eudora and see if I can fix it. ...Um, what version of Eudora do you have installed?
