The beige G3 specifies 10ns RAM while the B&W (as well as the G4s) specify 8ns. Also, the B&W specifies 64-bit, and that is high density RAM!
I feel strongly that what you're experiencing is a machine specific oddity and not a rev.A limitation.
There may be an undocumented 3rd slot limitation, but I've never heard of it...
