often drives that seem dead will come back if you use the disk formatter to put the 
driver
back on the drive, you can do this without a complete reformat and not lose your data. 
i've had to do this a couple of times over the years.  if nothing else, try formatting 
it.
 if that fails, pull the drive out of the case and try it plugged into an ata port to 
see
if the drive or the converter in the external box is the problem.  of course it could 
also
be a cable or connector problem.
