warning! major rant! that's disappointing. was that on the "science" channel? i find the extensive talking down to people, even on the science channel and discovery, and the frequent mis-statement of things (beyond simple simplification which is bad enough) on those channels to be rather distressing. these are promoted as channels with programing by people who understand science, but all too often gross mistakes are made, things are grossly over simplified, and things are out right mis-stated, even when paraphrasing what a professional has just said! are the problems with getting good scientist and engineers, and the publics gross misunderstanding of things any surprise? i realize that most people aren't science geeks to the extent i am, but i'd think that if you are going to watch a program about science that you'd want it to be correct, and maybe the "host" should even understand what they are talking about (or care beyond it being just another job). of course when shows like "discoveries this week" don't even talk about current discoveries but silly things that are often decades old (though some of those are constantly claimed to be knew by the scammers involved) and in some cases have already failed to pan out, or clearly won't.
is it any surprise that the department of justice wasted good money paying for someone to try and develop a tazer that used a pair of ultraviolet lasers to create ionized paths in the air rather than wires (why did no one realize that this would be a blinding weapon? how can you give out money for research projects without any scientific analysis of it at all?)? they were proud of this project, it was in their internal news documents and touted as one of the major advances they were working on. yeah, it uses lasers so it must be great! listen to people who have a clue! before spending millions of dollars go out and solicit opinions of people who have a clue, and put people in charge who have some small clue. and why when these projects are over aren't people ever charged with fraud? the people who got money for this idea were nothing but con artist and thieves. of course the same can be said about the history channel (it's actually a lot worse, and really, really disappointing) and the other niche channels that are perceived as educational (not to mention the many, many failings of the "entertainment" channels). then again i'm just disgusted by tv any more in any case. everything has gotten stupid, mean, and mocking, and just plain ignorant and failing to show any compassion (as opposed to just plain lust and greed). i'm not sure if they are just providing what people want as society degrades, or if they are really pushing that degradation, in either case it's really alarming. like i said, once you get garbage into your' head it's hard to get out, and a lot of people are getting some serious garbage in their heads about what's normal in how people are or should be treated etc. argh. wasted money, wasted time, wasted brains. if the public is going to be stupid and ignorant why shouldn't they be drunk and stoned all day? nothing bothers me more than people who actually have brains but refuse to use them, and i've seen a lot of people like that first hand. not bothering to think about something doesn't make someone less responsible for the outcome, it makes them more responsible even while there behavior is irresponsible.
