First, there are no stupid observations here--well, maybe some, but certainly not yours. That's what this place is for.

Second, you didn't mention if you were near an Apple Store or an authorized Apple dealer with repair facilities. I have both nearby, and made my last two BTO purchases from the authorized service/sales dealer. I've accepted their usual policy of no discounts but rewarded them for excellent hardware service over the years--and continued building a relationship for when I need help. Actually, I got my G5 when our state had a "sales tax holiday (7%)" for an August weekend for back-to-school that included computers, and the store inexplicably offered an additional 2% discount on almost everything. The store did charge less than Apple for RAM upgrades. I don't know about student discounts and you will obviously check that wherever you shop.

It's true the major online dealers (MacMall, etc.) only discount systems about $5 but throw in cheap printers, RAM upgrades, etc., and that may suit you--if they offer student discounts, and they have free shipping.
