yes, however they generally don't work well with computers (or anything else, i've seen them in use) and they weigh a ton. the best thing to do is to have several levels of surge arrestors and noise filters (which some surge suppressers include while others don't) in series (and keep the cords away from each other, if the computer cord runs close to the cord for the first surge/noise filter it will pickup noise from that cable reducing the effectiveness of the filter).
a ups won't help with line quality unless it's an "online" ups which are much more expensive, normally the ups only provides power during a brownout or power loss (an online ups always makes it's own a.c. from the batteries while charging the batteries if there is still a.c. power from the power company, most ups systems just feed through the power companies power, possibly adjusting the voltage, until there is a drastic brown out or power loss at which point they turn on their dc/ac inverter and make a.c. power for your' computer). p.s., meci.com has some very good ups units for good prices, particularly the surplused ncr brand units (i have 2 of those myself, been using them for 3 years with great results), and some apc brand units as well. i've no connection with meci other than being a very happy customer. the most important things to do are to make sure the outlet is really grounded and wired correctly, most hardware stores have a plug in tester for this for $4-8 depending on brand etc., they are a good investment. also don't plug your' computer into the same circuit (i.e. outlet connected to the same breaker) as anything else, particularly things like refrigerators or anything with a large motor, or fluorescent lamps as all of these things create line noise and the motors will create surges and sags as they turn on and off. beyond that, have fun and enjoy your G5! they look like great machines. Some people are afraid of the unknown and change. George Bush is not only afraid of change, he is afraid of the present. George Bush's world is based on fear and distrust, he is incapable of trusting anyone or of receiving love and joy. The world only makes sense to Bush when there is a threat, if Al Queda did not exist Bush would have to invent them for the world to make sense to him. Do we want a leader who's life is based on fear and distrust or one who will embrace change and the unknown and lead us with hope into a more joyful future? <http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/columnists/9963983.htm?1c> <http://www.leinsdorf.com/2004/Soaries.htm> <http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6505.htm> -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
