What are the best methods of getting the recorded audio into and
copied to the iMac. Currently I am running a dual tape deck into the
mic in on the side of the iMac. What would be a good cheap or free
software package to use to record and mix the music to the hard
drive? Most of the work will be 2=track remastering but there is some
8 track stuff and even a 1/2" 16 track reel of tape to remix.

Please share any thoughts you might have on using the mac in this
application.

I posted a question regarding Mac OS X and recording Vinyl LPs on to an
Apple. A lot of people recommend Felt Tip Sound Studio.

http://www.felttip.com/products/soundstudio/

This was an excellent piece of software. The amount of work I have to
perform will exceed the 14 day trial. I almost purchased the product...
Almost...

I tried audacity, this is a freeware piece of recording software for Mac OS
X and Linux

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity does not have as intuitive of an interface as Sound Studio and it
is noticeably slower on my G4-500.

Price got the better of me. I went with the free Audacity over the $$Sound
Studio$$. The price of Sound Studio is very good. IMHO the software company
could sell that package for much much more. One feature that Audiocity has
over Sound Studio is; export the saved music file as an MP3, WAVE or Org.
Sound Studio would require a second rip step with LAME or iTunes.

I did look into purchasing a PCI Sound Card from M-Audio but I found the
quality of the onboard audio in fine for my listening pleasure.
