In my experience you need to connect your mac to your router via an Ethernet cable. Then, you need to open your TCP/IP control panel or (network prefs in OS X) and configure it to use the ethernet port and either DHCP or manually assign an IP number to your mac in the range of 192.168.1.2-254 or something. Don't use 1 as the last digit in the ip address as it would appear your router is using that address. DHCP should work though right out of the box on any router you buy today. You should just have to hook up the ethernet cable and configure your mac to use DHCP for network.
