Connect the xDSL modem to the WAN port of your router. Enable DHCP and PPPoE on that port.

Connect your computers to the LAN (ethernet) ports (hub) of the Router. Enable NAT and DHCP on the router's LAN port.

On your computers, enable DHCP in the TCP/IP control panels and turn off PPPoE.

Your router will obtain its public (WAN port) IP assignment and such from your ISP, over the xDSL circuit via PPPoE'd DHCP. ...Depending on the make/model modem, you may have to power-cycle the modem then power-cycle the router to force this to occur.

The NAT module in your router will then create a private intranet on its LAN port to talk to your computers. It will be in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x IP range (whichever you select).

Your computers will obtain private IP addresses and such from the router via DHCP. They talk to the router, the router then talks to the 'net...

The sites I've found mostly say
"Open [URL 192 168 1 1, my message bounced when I put in normal form] to
configure the router..." but I need to know what to do *before* that. I
think I can work it out from then on.

Many routers are configurable via a browser. That "private" IP is the default it's listening for.

And if anyone has pointers for connecting Win98

Network settings. Obtain address automatically (that's MS-speak for DHCP).

and network printers that would be helpful too.

Obtain the appropriate network-enabled drivers from the printer vendor.
