Well, since I wrote about Gimp-CUPS, I've done a bunch of work and am as stymied as ever about printing in Panther.
Panther does come with a driver for my Epson Stylus Photo 785epx, in the "more Epson Drivers" on install disk 3. It seems to match the latest that Epson offers on their web site which is good for os10.2.6 or so. They don't seem to have updated a driver for Panther. I had a fresh 10.2.8 installation and with no printers installed. The print page showed only a couple of items under the "copies and pages" dropdown menu. With my printer installed in Jaguar, there were more options including a "Printer Features" option that offers all the printer controls. From this I concluded that what is offered in that dropdown menu depends on the printer driver. In Panther (10.3.6) no such item appears, not even with the Gimp driver for this printer, even with the latest Gimp-Print beta version (5) installed. So it is impossible to access the controls for this printer. I tried installing other printers and drivers using the Advanced option (hold down option key while choosing ADD in the printer set up) and no driver seemed to offer the "Features" or controls in the drop down.
