This is what it says on the site:
* gravure la meilleure vitesse : vous permet de choisir TOUTES les vitesses disponibles sur TOUS les mdias... A vous de ne pas faire n'importe quoi en tentant de graver un DVD-RW 8x ! Testez vous-mmes vos supports.
Translation:
"Burning at the best speed: permits you to choose ALL available speeds on ALL media. It's up to you to avoid doing the wrong thing in attempting to burn a DVD-RW at 8X! Test your media yourself."

So it seems the firmware there still allows you to ignore the rated speed of the media at your own risk.

Dan

I got my firmware and OS X patcher from the following french site, although now looking there it looks as if they've removed the patched firmware that allowed 8x burning on 4x media (plus region free and 12x ripping) and replaced it with one that is only region free and 12x DVD ripping, at least if I'm hack-interpreting the French correctly. I've not had any problems with the 4x at 8x patch, but maybe some have? Anyway, I can't read French, but you can find the relevant downloads easy enough:

There is firmware for DVR-106 drives as well. Looks like they have two unofficial options for it.
