It may be true that burning 4x media at 8x can cause issues with other players. I did find that although two DVDs I burned worked fine on my home player (the one hooked up to my TV), one of the two didn't seem to work right on my sister's DVD player. Perhaps I'll switch to the unofficial firmware that only makes the player region free and, more importantly, rip at 12x speed, which the player is quite capable of doing. The limit on that was artificial.

I may be wrong on this point but I think because of firmware, my Pioneer 106 has a top speed of 4x for DVD, so I can only burn DVD media at 4x. After i update the firmware, I will supposedly be able to burn at 8x on media that is rated at 8x.
