I am just wondering if I can change my IP address periodically?
I'm using DSL from our phone company.

Why do you want to change it? Are you worried someone is trying to attack you? Changing it will not make you any more secure.

As for how... Your IP is assigned to you via DHCP (either plain or wrapped in PPPoE). As long as your computer continues to successfully renew its DHCP Lease, it will be granted continued use of the same IP address. So to get a new IP, you need to kill off (expire) your current Lease and get a totally new one.

Try this:
1. Shutdown your Mac. This automatically issues a dhcp-release.
2. Unplug the DSL modem.
3. Leave the DSL modem without power for at least 30 seconds.
4. Plug the modem back in and wait for it to re-sync.
5. Wait for x minutes.
6. Boot your Mac.

How long to wait? That's a tuffie. You're waiting for the lease entry in the DHCP server's database to be purged. That may take 2 minutes or hours. Try a few mins and see if that works...

- Dan.
