When our DSL was hooked up, we didn't have our modem yet. So when I got the modem in, I had to call the phone company with the modems id/serial number. Why did they want that to be able to set up our acct?

I'm not sure why they would do this, other than to keep track of their hardware. They probably have it drop-shipped from a manufacturer or warehouse and maybe that's how they keep track of registrations, warranties, etc. The ip address won't be tied to a serial number.

They may have been associating that serial number with the unique ID assigned to the ethernet port on your router (known as a MAC address - but not because it's specific to Apple computer. All ether devices have a MAC address).

If the phone company is particularly anal retentive they may be requiring that you use only their officially issued equipment on your DSL line. Associating your account and your MAC address may prevent you from using someone else's equipment, etc. It may also make it worthless to a theif.
