Is it likely, or possible that my 10,000 RPM SCSI Cheetahs are not up to speed in time for the drivers to be accessed on my Beige G3 rev 1/A ROM during boot? Something like this appears to be happening. They do take a while to wind up.Two SCA SCSI drives, two new OS X 10.2.1 installs, NO boot whether it's the built-in SCSI bus or my ATTO controller but they mount and the OS X files are all accessible.

It's possible. Make sure they're not jumpered to wait for a 'wake-up' or to delay spinup. Many higher-end SCSI drives do have such settings.

Yes, I made sure nothing like that was set. I only have one of the really small jumpers required for those settings so it's hard to mis-set anything. I really do need to get more somewhere. :-)

What model # Cheetah are they?

Cheetah ST118202LC and ST318404LC

I think, though, that the reason people aren't replying is that they don't have a solution for you...

I got a few helpful off-list suggestions just today.

Like I stated in another post, many of the SCSI/cards/drive technical experts seem to have vacated this list. They can only keep repeating themselves giving free advice so many times until burnout sets in, I'd guess, plus they have lives otherwise to attend to. There isn't really much of a comprehensive reference documenting beige issues. I have searched archives, forums and websites until I'm bleary-eyed. It's all piecemeal. And the beige problems (and solutions) are unique to ones particular systems variables.

Besides Apple, which has a lot of helpful info. but just not so easy to find, XLR8yourmac and a few others, this site is well indexed and helpful:

This was kinda solution-specific but helpful:
http://resale.headgap.com/osxnotes.html

But Ryan Rempels Read-Me for XpostFacto (even though I did not need or use XpostFacto) held some key advice for anyone running OS X on a beige that seems to have made a difference. He advises disks should be initialized under OS 9 disk utility, not the OS X installer for better booting ability after the install.

I reinitialized my on-board SCSI Cheetah connected via SCA 80 to 68/50 adapter in OS 9.2.2 Drive set-up then reinstalled OS X. Then, I followed another suggestion to only select the boot system under OS 9. Today I did several OS X updates requiring reboots and did a cold-start boot with this SCSI drive, all successfully. One other thing that may have helped was Kris Tilford's reminder to set the jumper on the drive to Force SE which I had forgotten after going back and forth between the LVD ATTO card and on-board SCSI.

I'm going to do the same OS 9 Initialization and OS X reinstall on the Cheetah drive currently on the ATTO host and see what happens. I am only going to end up using one of these in my beige box. The other is for a friend to use to introduce him to OS X on his beige and get him familiarized while he decides which new Mac computer to buy in a couple months which will obviously have Panther. He has previously never upgraded from OS 8.6. I'm sure Apple won't mind allowing the "test drive" before the big purchase.
