First of all, is this card a specific Mac USB/FW card such as the Sonnet Tempo Trio? If not try to find out if it is an OHCI compliant card, if it is it will work in a Mac. All you have to do then is to install the USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31132). I can't remember if OS 8.6 automatically installed FW extensions, but it could be that you have to update these aswell. BTW if you've got a Sonnet Tempo Trio card there's a small chance that it won't work at all in your Beige G3. From their site (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_trio.html): "Some Beige Power Macintosh G3 Minitower and Desktop machines (those with a revision 3 logic board) are incompatible with the Tempo Trio. To determine your computer's logic board revision, open the Apple system profiler utility and find the ROM revision line. If the information listed is $77D.45F2, your computer has a revision 3 logic board and is not compatible with the Tempo Trio." Since you have a 266MHz G3 I highly doubt it's a revision 3.
