Want to share 1 dialup connection. How?

Connect both via ethernet. Set up the system connected to the phone line to share internet connection (System Prefs > Sharing) set up other mac to use Ethernet for internet and get address from server.

Voila. Works like a charm; I've done it with my 540c and my desktop at home.

But the ISP will see and charge me tons of money. I was told i needed a router.

Danielle,

What somebody was actually trying to say is that you need a box that will do NAT, and that box must exist between your ISP and your network. It doesn't matter what that box is or what it looks like - it must do NAT and it must have two network interfaces.

Now, except for Apple's AirPort Base Station, I don't know of any NAT boxes with a modem in them. Bruce & I were under the impression that Apple's Internet Sharing *is* a NAT "device" (albeit a software one). Now, I have used Internet Sharing, but never over a modem.

If you really want to share a *dialup* connection, then get yourself an AirPort Base Station and set it up to do NAT for your computers. You would need a hub or switch, because the AirPort Base Station has only one ethernet port, and you need two (one for each computer). Of course, if you have AirPort in your Macs, then you don't need a hub or switch, because AirPort will take care of that part for you.

If you're trying to share a high-speed connection, any DSL/cable router will do, and the configuration would be similar to the one outlined in the previous paragraph.
